Mark Friedman is chief operating officer for UAI Technology, Inc., the parent company for University Conference Services and Phoenix-Hecht. He is administrator and trustee of the company’s benefit programs, including its retirement plans and health insurance programs, and a member of the company’s Board of Directors. He is also the president of Mid-Jersey Realty, LLC, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Klein Decisions. Previously, he was president of Garden State Dental, LLC, a dental practice management company, and Leonard Financial Planning Systems, a software company. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester and an M.B.A. from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and holds the certified financial planner designation.

Benchmarking Trends in DC Retirement Plans

Defined contribution retirement plans are the centerpiece of the private-sector retirement system in the United States. More than 60 million Americans are covered by DC plans, with assets now in excess of $4 trillion. It is important for company leaders to have a detailed understanding of DC plans and the role they play. In his keynote presentation, Gerry Mullane previews How America Saves 2012: A Report on Vanguard 2011 Defined Contribution Plan Data. His remarks provide an overview and analysis of the trends and data of DC plans and participant behavior.

Gerard P. Mullane is a principal in the Vanguard Institutional Investor Group and a member of the senior leadership team overseeing Vanguard’s retirement plan business. He is responsible for all new business development of retirement plans and asset management programs across the United States. Mr. Mullane joined Vanguard in 1989, serving initially in Corporate Planning and Development as a member of the company’s Quantitative Equity Group. While there, he participated in the launch of many of Vanguard’s innovative, market-leading index funds. In 1991, he became an institutional sales executive, marketing the company’s investments and services directly to large retirement plan sponsors. Prior to joining Vanguard, Mr. Mullane served as an artillery officer in the U.S. Army, holding numerous leadership positions. He received his B.S. from the United States Military Academy at West Point and an M.B.A. from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College.

Vince Giovinazzo, chief executive officer and founder of 401(k) Advisors, has worked closely with plan sponsors, service providers and broker-dealers for more than 25 years to bring about positive changes to the industry. His career spans positions at Creative Plan Concepts, UNUM and The Principal Financial Group, where he gained intense experience in financial underwriting, management, strategic product development, service and sales. In 2000 he launched his own company, 401(k) Advisors, without outside funding or venture capital. He also developed the industry’s first institutionally based investment scoring system with both quantitative and qualitative metrics, a breakthrough for defined contribution plans. Mr. Giovinazzo has gone on to create many other industry-leading tools and technologies to better serve sponsors and participants in the areas of consulting, fee benchmarking, due diligence and compliance, specifically: ScorecardSM System Generator and e401k Proposal™. In 2004 he founded 401(k) Producer Services, which was rebranded to Retirement Plan Advisory Group in 2008 and is the nation’s largest practice management platform, serving 300+ advisory firms representing more than $60 billion in assets under advisement. The 401kWire.com ranks him in the top 15 on its list of the “100 Most Influential People in Defined Contribution in 2011.” An expert in organizational development, operations and business strategy, Mr. Giovinazzo is a frequent speaker at industry events and authors many white papers on current topics and trends. In the fall of 2010, in collaboration with Warren Cormier, he helped to develop the first ever behavioral database for advisors to measure best practices against industry peers, PRISM 365™. Mr. Giovinazzo earned a B.A. in philosophy, for which he credits his passion for critical thinking.

David Gray is vice president of client experience at Charles Schwab. He has more than 13 years of diverse experience in the retirement services industry. Under his leadership, the client experience and product management team operates with an outside-in perspective that aims to design solutions to meet client needs. The team is responsible for developing a cohesive experience strategy to innovate across all touch points and for defining a differentiating plan sponsor and participant solution set. Mr. Gray has held leadership positions in plan sponsor services, relationship management, institutional sales, business development and general management. Previously, he was vice president of client service for The Standard, leading the national relationship management and education teams. Prior to that, Mr. Gray held the position of vice president and regional director for Invesmart, Inc., where he managed all facets of retirement service for four offices within that firm. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Tennessee Temple University. He has also earned a certified pension consultant designation from the American Society of Pension Professionals & Actuaries. Mr. Gray is also FINRA Series 7, 24 and 66 licensed.

Dr. Kaplan has more than 16 years of experience in healthcare consulting. He is a strategic thinker who is knowledgeable and passionate about behavioral economics and how it can be used to change employee behavior. He also focuses on healthcare quality and effectiveness and how to speed innovation in healthcare. Dr. Kaplan received his undergraduate degree at the Johns Hopkins University and attended medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of San Francisco and is a board certified pediatrician.

Peter Garner is the practice leader and director of The Benefit Services Group, Inc. (BSG®) Health Care Business Intelligence Consulting department. He has served for more than 30 years in various roles in the health care, insurance and employee benefits industries and has extensive experience in analyzing employee benefits and health care data to develop performance improvement plans for clients. Mr. Garner also spent many years building managed care provider networks and HMO and PPO insurance products. His understanding of both health care providers and insurance operations makes him a unique resource for health care systems that are ready to change and become accountable for the care they deliver. Mr. Garner works closely with the BSG Data Analytics department; together they focus on assisting health care systems with developing new methods for measuring clinical effectiveness and efficiencies. Their work also involves creating new contracting strategies with payors, such as global reimbursement rates, and working on accountable care operations. Mr. Garner earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Johns Hopkins University and a master of public health at Yale University. He currently is an adjunct professor at the College of Business at Cardinal Stritch University specializing in organizational strategy, change management and leadership.

Gerald Frye is president and owner of The Benefit Services Group, Inc. (BSG®), an employee benefit brokerage firm that serves nationwide employers in a variety of industries and consults for health care systems in Wisconsin and Illinois. He has served for more than 30 years in various roles in the insurance and employee benefits industry. Mr. Frye is regarded as an industry innovator and thought leader and has been a featured speaker at numerous events, including University Conference Services’ Health and Welfare Plan Management for Mid-Sized Employers® conference series, ISCEBS seminars, physician symposiums, employment law seminars, and Society of Financial Service Professionals events. He was an invited speaker at Wisconsin legislative hearings regarding state health benefit issues. Mr. Frye attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and majored in chemistry and accounting. He has earned the professional designations of chartered life underwriter (CLU), chartered financial consultant (ChFC), registered health underwriter (RHU), registered employee benefit consultant (REBC) and chartered advisor for senior living (CASL). Mr. Frye also holds his insurance licenses for life, accident and health and is an NASD series 7 and 63 registered representative.
